OPTIMIST RACING PROGRAMS


  Developement Team
This program is for sailors who have demonstrated a keen interest in racing and who have attained White Sail Level III or equivalent. Sailors must have strong boat handling skills and be eager to compete. Racing knowledge will cover wind strategy, race tactics and boat and sail tuning. Most course time will be spent on the water perfecting boat handling skills and gaining confidence in competitive situations. All sailors in this program are expected to participate in fleet race nights. Throughout July, the team will attend 2 regattas. Team members are encouraged to participate in other regattas in August. Racing Optis that are provided are in top racing condition.

Advanced Optimist Racing Team
Most Olympic sailors started racing in an Optimist. Recognized world-wide, Optis can be raced until the age of 14. This is a comprehensive program for Opti racers who would like to race for the entire summer. The team will attend 3 regattas with a coach including the RHYC Fogh Boorman. Racers must provide their own boat. If a racing Opti is required, an additional fee will apply. Please email sailingschool@rhyc.ca to inquire.

Fees indicated in the racing programs include coaching costs only. Additional costs will be incurred for regatta registration, transportation, food and accommodations. All participants will meet, as soon as possible, prior to the beginning of the racing session, to discuss these costs and a budget will be formulated for each team.

  CYA Silver/Gold Program
The Silver/Gold Program is a comprehensive course for sailors 14-18 years of age who are interested in racing and have ideally completed their Bronze Level V or equivalent. Any sailor who has not reached this level will be required to work towards its completion. The course, taught in single and double-handed boats including Byte, Laser Radial, Laser, and Laser 2 class boats, is ideal for the avid racer. The 29er may be included, dependent on experience. Topics include tactics, rules, sail and boat tuning, strategy and sail controls. The student will gain confidence in competitive sailing. Students are encouraged to set their own goals. The course complies with CYA Standards and students will be able to earn levels up to Gold. All sailors in this program are expected to participate in fleet race nights. The team will attend 3 regattas, finishing with CORK. This program requires occasional weekend travel and demands a high level of commitment from both sailors and their parents including chaperoning and pulling trailers, as required.

With RHYC boat $1710 RHYC member; $1,900 non-member

Program Dates:

  HIGH PERFORMANCE RACING TEAM SINGLE-HANDED
This High Performance team is for accomplished, enthusiastic sailors who have raced, in their single-handed boat (Byte, Radial and Laser Full Rig), for at least one season and are prepared to give racing their full attention. The racing program requires travel and demands a high level of commitment from both sailors and their parents, including chaperoning and pulling trailers, as required. Sailors learn racing rules, tactics and competitive boat-handling skills through on-water drills and on-shore coaching sessions from a CYA certified race coach.

Age: 15 and up (as of December 2010)

Students must supply their own boat.
Note: Applications will be reviewed for acceptance to this program. Racing resumes will be required. There are only 9 spots in this program

Regatta expenses not included. Budget to be determined based on final schedule.

REGIONAL COACHING PROGRAM FOR DEVELOPING RACERS
Extend your training season! This program encourages the serious racer to train year round! Dinghy sailors of all ages, with a keen interest in developing their racing skills, will have access to coaching one day on the weekends and one day a week, surrounding the summer season (schedule to be finalized). The program included practice races and onshore sessions. Boats typically included in the program are Optimist, Byte, 420, laser, Laser radial, 29er and Laser >>. For an additional coast a Laser >>, 420 or Optimist can be provided, if required. CYA levels are not awarded as a part of this program.

Program Fee: $275 per session

Spring Session:
Second week of May until the end of June
Fall Session :
Second week of September until the beginning of November
 
Winter Session:
Second week of January until the beginning of March.

  • Session lengths are as listed in the brochure and run full weeks including holidays.
  • Youth Classes run from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm daily.
  • Equipment needed: life jacket with whistle attached, hat, sunglasses, sun screen, towel, swimsuit & extra clothing.
  • Fees do not include regatta registration, transportation or other costs associated with attendance at regattas.

Waiver: I authorize the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club to provide such medical care to the person listed above, as it may deem necessary in the event of injury or otherwise and agree to pay for all expenses incurred thereby.
