Waterfront Camp - Ages 5 to 9

The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club offers an outdoor, play-based learning environment alongside our Junior Sail program for children ages 5 to 9 year olds. The one week camp is a refreshing opportunity for your children to explore sailing on the Hamilton Waterfront and in our indoor, classroom environment. The program focuses on play, crafting, sailing activities, local trips, water sports and walks around the harbour. Through these experiences, the children will become familiar with basic sailing terminology. Learn what it feels like to be on the water!

Session 1: July 1 to July 5 Early Registration by May 19
Session 2: July 8 to July 12 Early Registration by May 19
Session 3: July 15 to July 19 Early Registration by June 2

Opti CANSail 1 & 2 (8-12)

Opti CANSail 1 & 2 (8-12)

CANSail introduces new sailors to the fundamental sailing skills in the Optimist/420 dinghy. The type of boat sailed is dependent upon on the sailor’s weight and height. The program focuses on creating a fun environment while developing physical literacy. On the water, young sailors work on boat safety, boat-handling skills, and seamanship. In the classroom, students will learn basic terminology, knots and the rules of the water. Sailors also work on swimming skills taught in our pool by certified swimming instructors. 

  • Note: The age range listed is a recommendation; please consider height and weight recommendations both boat classes.
  • Opti: 50-110 lbs. / > 5’7
  • 420: 110 lbs.+ / < 5’3

420 CANSail 1 & 2 (11-18)

420 CANSail 1 & 2 (11-18)

CANSail 3

CANSail 3 is a four-week-long program that builds upon the fundamental skills established in CANSail 1&2 on the water and in the classroom. Sailors at this level will refine and improve their skills from CANSail 1/2 to become more confident sailing alone and in pairs. CANSail 3 introduces boat tuning, sail trim, backwards sailing, roll tacking and surfing. All sailors are given opportunities to apply their individual sailing skills and sail with friends. CANSail 3 sailors will also be introduced to the basic racing skills needed to compete in club race-nights. 

 A minimum of two weeks of sailing are required to complete this level.

Prerequisites: Participants must be age 11 or over, must be able to swim, and must have previously completed CANSail 2.

$1225 or $1325 after early registration date

Session 2 is a 19 day program, off Civic Holiday, $1195 or $1260 after early registration date

420 Flying a Spinnaker

CANSail 4

CANSail 4 is a four-week-long program that builds upon the fundamental skills established in CANSail 3 on the water and in the classroom.  Sailors are challenged to perfect their sailing skills in heavier wind conditions, both individually and in pairs. Greater emphasis is placed on self-sufficiency and problem solving, including skills such as rudderless sailing, trapeze, fly spinnaker and advanced theory. CANSail 4 sailors will also be introduced to the basic racing skills needed to compete in club race-nights. Sailors will have the ability to participate in RHYC and other local regattas.

Prerequisites: Participants must be age 12 or over, must be able to swim, and must have previously completed CANSail 3.

Able Sail

The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club has sailboats specifically designed for individuals who require more support in the boat due to a disability. The RHYC provides a variety of boats depending on the needs and skill level of the sailor. Come out and join us Wednesday nights throughout the season.

  • Youth Classes run from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm daily.
  • Equipment needed: life jacket with whistle attached, hat, sunglasses, sun screen, towel, swimsuit & extra clothing.
  • Fees do not include regatta registration, transportation or other costs associated with attendance at regattas.

Participant Responsibility

Upon registration, participants will be required to sign a waiver accepting responsibility for damages, injuries and liabilities relating to these. The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club is not liable for these and other circumstances leading to injury.
