Haul-Out

October 21 & 22, 2023

Dear Members,

For those planning to store your boats with the club this winter, please review the following important information.

Reminder of key dates:
October 8: haul-out form deadline. Submissions after this date are subject to a $150 late fee.
October 21 and 22: Haul out is a two-day event and at this point, the schedule is not created yet so please make sure you or your representative will be available on either day.
October 18: We need all the masts to be down by the Wednesday before haul-out and stored on the racks.

Also please review the attached Winterizing Checklist Ross Munro and the environmental committee provided. It is a wealth of information for adequately preparing your boat at the end of the season.

Please forward completed forms (also attached) to harbourmaster@rhyc.ca

Thank you

Launch

April 2024

Welcome back to the docks everyone, and a special welcome to our new members!

A reminder about keeping safe on the docks:

children should be encouraged to not run on the docks, and consider having them wear a life jacket

no chairs should be put on the docks as it narrows the paths and increases the danger of falling

bicycles can be walked on the docks, but shouldn't be ridden

report any issues or broken dock pieces to the office if you see them so they can be fixed promptly

For the consideration of others:

tie your halyards away from the mast: to a shroud or something on the deck as this prevents the loud slapping noise against the mast when there is wind

it's always a good idea when leaving your boat to try to imagine what conditions would be like in a 30 kt wind - from any direction!

ensure the gate is closed behind you, except to hold it open if another member is right behind you ;)

Here's to a wonderful and safe boating season!

Please save the following dates on your calendar.

Shrink-wrap bin, April  - April

Water available outside and on docks,  April

Launch - Saturday, April

The fence in the parking lot will be removed on May

Also, please save Sunday, April  as a possible rain date in case conditions make it unsafe for the crane to lift the boats. We will follow up with more details as the launch date approaches. The board and bridge are excited about the upcoming season, and we are working together to achieve a safe and successful launch.

Launch Day Tips

Spring has arrived, and it’s time to start preparing for the launch.
Look for specific instructions to be mailed out for individuals as we get closer to April 23rd.

Here are some tips to help you on your way, and ensure an expeditious, trouble-free, and enjoyable launch day.

If you covered your boat with shrink wrap, bundle it up after removal and deposit it in the recycling bin provided by the club. Please ensure all ropes, vents, vent wires, and other foreign objects are separated from the shrink wrap, and placed in the garbage. Wash your boat using environmentally-friendly cleaning products that are certified by the Ecologo program. Cleaning your hull onshore avoids the cleaning product from being washed into the lake.EcoLogo-certified wax products are available to treat non-skid decks and enhance traction. Waxing the deck allows the deck to be cleaned with just water for the remainder of the season. Your bilge should be properly cleaned before the boat is launched in the spring. The wash water can be easily collected and properly disposed of when the boat is on land. Ensure your batteries are connected and charged. Re-commission your engine and start it in the compound (let it run for about 15 seconds) to ensure that you can motor away from the launch area. Winter antifreeze is a hazardous waste – EcoLogo products included – and must be pumped out and captured from the vessel prior to launch, and taken for off-site disposal. Open your engine-cooling seacock, and double-check that all others are closed. Service your seacocks as required. Mark your toe rails fore and aft/port and starboard where you want the slings placed to lift your boat. Hang your fenders out and have a bow and stern line attached and hanging down before the boat is about to be launched. Each line should be the length of your boat. If you are happy with the position of the boat in your cradle, anchor your base keel board to the cradle and screw a block of wood across the front and/or back of your keel to show where you want the boat placed back in the cradle at haulout. Also, consider marking your cradle pads to minimize the adjustments needed at haul-out. Make sure that your boat name and the owner's name are on the cradle. Mark the cradle for bow and stern. Erase all other markings. Clear the area under/around your cradle of tripping hazards.Following launch, remove your tripod stands and cradle pads, and be prompt in disassembling and folding your cradle for storage.

Re: Shrink-wrap Re-cycling

This note is to alert you to RHYC shrink-wrap re-cycling guidelines for this spring. This change brings our club into alignment with Boating Ontario – Clean Marine best practices, and has been arranged by our Environment Committee working with RHYC operations staff to put in place policies that are already followed by most of the other yacht clubs in the province.

A bin will be delivered to the parking lot storage area on Friday April 1, and is intended to be used only for shrink-wrap disposal. If you have no re-use plans for your cover, please schedule its removal and disposal in the bin during the 2-week interval that follows.

To make this process work, we’re asked to separate all ropes, vents, vent wires and other foreign objects from the shrink-wrap. Those items should be placed in the club garbage receptacles. The shrink-wrap can then be bundled and placed in the designated bin. No other items should be disposed of in this bin.

If you have any questions, please check with Pascal.
