BOATING
LEARN TO SAIL
Ahoy, cruisers and racers alike!
The 2023 season is upon us and we are excited to
announce a new program at RHYC.
This year we will be launching a series of evening
cruises. What better way to spend a summer evening than on a short harbour sail
with your crew and newfound friends? That’s right, new friends. RHYC membership has been growing steadily over the
last several years and a big part of that growth is made up of our social
members and other members who don’t have a boat. A great way to appreciate membership in a yacht club is
to actually get out on the water. We are looking for skippers to show their
RHYC hospitality and invite other members to join them on these evening
cruises. We all benefit by having a strong membership and increased
collegiality. Let’s not be
strangers to each other.
What is involved? Obviously, we need friendly
skippers who have a boat and will volunteer. Bruce Cook, the skipper of Locus,
has stepped up to head the program, working with the Cruising Committee (Jill
Haythornthwaite and Lissa Connor). A series of dates will be posted and you can
register to be a host boat. Please indicate the number of guests that you can
accommodate.
This is also a great opportunity for power boaters
to try sailing and for sailors to discover the joys of a power boat. Learn what
it takes to ready a boat, and how to cast off, work the lines, and dock.
The cruise will last approximately 90 minutes,
starting at 6 pm. A 20- to 30-minute tour of your boat and a safety orientation
will precede your departure. The destination is up to you. We hope that you and
your new friends will finish the evening by joining your fellow cruisers at the
clubhouse. But that is up to you.
CANCELLATIONS: NO-SHOWS OR WEATHER
Weather cannot be controlled and can ruin a fun evening. In case of inclement weather, the Cruising Coordinator will make the cancellation call by 3 pm and will email you. Attempts will be made to reschedule for a rain date.
No-shows are a problem for our skippers, who will have taken the time to organize their boats. Please contact the Cruising Coordinator, preferably by 3 pm that day, to cancel.
COORDINATION
Our Cruising Coordinator will send out an email tabling boats, slip locations, skipper, crew, and guest names. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the 6:30 departure and check in with the coordinator, who will be located on the front lawn. Find your boat, meet your skipper, share in readying the boat, go through a safety check, and enjoy the harbour.
ODDS AND ENDS
Boat owners are asked to have a short safety discussion prior to leaving the dock and to ensure there are enough life jackets on board for each boater.
The minimum age for participants is 16.
Guests are asked to wear shoes with non-marking soles.
Non-boat-owners: Feel free to ask your skipper and crew to the clubhouse for a drink or snack after the sail. Remember, they have volunteered their time and boat for you.
Have a Boat: Indicate if you have a power or sailing boat and the number you can accommodate.
Choose from one evening event or all four (and even rain dates).
Need a Boat: Indicate if you would prefer a sail or power boat experience and the number of participants.
We will try our best to assign participants to different boats on each cruise.
Sharing your level of experience from “none,” to “I know what a winch is,” to “semi-pro” will also be helpful.
The number of boats and guests will fluctuate for each event. We cannot promise that every reservation will be accepted.
Please note that we will require a mobile phone number in order to reach you with any last-minute changes.
Registration will close three days prior to each event.
