RHYC High Performance Race Team

The RHYC race program is a comprehensive course for sailors 14-18 years of age with racing experience that wish to further their abilities to a high-performance level. The course is taught in single and double-handed boats including 420, Laser Radial, and 29ers.

420 RACE TEAM

In Canada, the 420 has become a popular boat to develop double-handed sailing skills in youth sailors. The ideal combined crew weight for this boat is around 250 pounds, please note that you must find a sailing partner prior to registration (coaches may offer assistance). From here sailors will have a skill set that they can take to double-handed Olympic class boats like Nacra, 470’s or 49ers. This team will be coached by an experienced coach and will be traveling to local weekend events and several major events. RHYC has two ZIM 420’s available to charter for a small fee but encourages participants to bring their own boats.

LASER RADIAL RACE TEAM

The Laser Radial is the Men’s and Women’s singlehanded class in the youth worlds. It is also the women’s singlehanded Olympic class and the development class for the men’s Laser. The weight and size of the sailor are very important in the laser radial. This team will be coached by an experienced coach and will be traveling to local weekend events and several major events. RHYC does NOT have Lasers available for chartering.

The program requires a high level of commitment for both athletes and parents. Sailors are expected to participate in a fitness and nutrition program in addition to daily water training and theory instruction. The parents are an important part of the team and are expected to chaperone and/or tow trailers to regattas. More information will be posted. Please contact us with any questions.

Spring Training

Spring Training is coming up quickly! This year's sessions will combine both HP and Opti Race teams. Spring Training is an excellent opportunity to get a head start on the competitive season. The focus of the program is to prepare racers for the summer by working on boat-handling skills in a variety of wind conditions. We require sailors to have adequate clothing and for a range of weather and water conditions we may encounter. Optimist, 420, Laser, Radial, and 29er sailors are invited to participate in Spring Training.

A Minimum of 6 Sailors pre-registered are required to conduct the course.

Fall Training

Fall Training extends the racing season and provides for continued opportunities to refine the skills learned in the summer. This is a great way to remain engaged and to prepare for the Florida circuit over the winter. The wide range of conditions experienced during the fall adds a further dimension to the training sessions. We require sailors to have adequate clothing and for a range of weather and water conditions we may encounter. Optimist, 420, Laser, Radial, and 29er sailors are invited to participate in Fall Training.

A Minimum of 6 Sailors pre-registered are required to conduct the course.

Participant Responsibility

Upon registration, participants will be required to sign a waiver accepting responsibility for damages, injuries, and liabilities relating to these. The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club is not liable for these and other circumstances leading to injury.

More Information
The RHYC Racing Teams are limited in size. All teams are coached by an experienced race coach, and more coaches are added as registration dictates. Teams are open to Members and Non-Members. On teams that use club boats (420 and Optimist), the boats will go to member families first, after that it will be based on the time of registration. It is strongly encouraged that participants bring their own boats to train with. RHYC Sail Training will NOT be responsible for the delivery of coach boats and club-owned sailboats to events. Assistance from parents is necessary and all parents will share the cost of expenses while transporting club equipment. RHYC participants will be responsible for loading and securing trailers at events. Parents of all racers are expected to attend regattas and supervise their own children. RHYC will NOT be responsible for organizing travel, chaperoning, or accommodations for participants. It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that their child(ren) is properly supervised during an away regatta by an adult. RHYC will host pre-season mandatory parent meetings for each race team.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the team's schedule and allow parents to meet to form accommodation, trailering, and chaperoning plans. The RHYC will take responsibility for its participants during predetermined training/racing times. There will be a direct handoff of the participants from the parent responsible to the coach at the start and end of racing/training each day.
